Chapter Ten

Early on Sunday morning, Jaslene dropped Imani off at the performing arts center for an all-day music rehearsal. Afterward, she returned home to get ready for church and prepare for Sasha’s arrival too. When Jaslene had told Sasha the samples were ready for Southern Bride, she said she would arrive on Sunday to pick them up. Since Jaslene was also designing centerpieces for the fundraiser, she created an extra sample. Southern Bride would receive two of Jaslene’s creations after all.

As Jaslene was entering her condo, the clickety clack of heels coming up the stairs startled her. Soon, Sasha’s signature hair came into view, followed by her smile. “Hey, Jaslene!”

“Morning. I wasn’t expecting you this early.” Jaslene unlocked her door and stepped inside of her condo. Sasha followed. They entered and plopped down on the couch. “I can’t wait to see the centerpieces. Where are they?”

“Be right back.” Jaslene headed to her living room to get the centerpieces. One was filled with peace lilies, and the other had violet and red asters. The one with the peace lilies would be used for Sasha’s wedding, while the deeper colored flowers were for the fundraiser. Jaslene had wrapped gold and black ribbon around its vase and included photos of some of the great artists of the era: Langston and Zora and Cab. Jaslene carefully set both pieces on the coffee table.

“Ooh! These are gorgeous. I knew you could do it!”

Jaslene smiled. “Thank you for encouraging me.”

“No problem, sis! What do you have planned for the rest of the day?”

Jaslene told Sasha about her plans to go to New Life today with Marcus.

“That’s great.” Sasha applauded. She could be so dramatic, but Jaslene loved it.

Sasha helped Jaslene pick out an outfit for church: a cream-colored blouse with a Peter Pan collar, cream dress pants, and tan flats. After trying on the outfit, Jaslene studied herself in the full-length mirror in the living room.

“How do I look?” Jaslene twirled, showing off her outfit.

“Fabulous! Now all you need is an ivory hat, and you’d look like a styling church lady.”

Jaslene laughed. “That wasn’t my aim, but it’s an interesting take.” She smoothed the front of her blouse. “I don’t know why I’m so nervous.”

“You’re nervous because it matters to you,” Sasha said, smiling. “I could see how much it matters to you, just by the look on your face.”

“You’re right. It matters a lot.” Jaslene sat on the couch and reached for her black purse.

A knock sounded. “That must be Marcus.” Jaslene opened the front door.

“Morning, ladies,” Marcus said, stepping into her home. He wore a tan suit jacket and pants, along with a white collared shirt. Marcus could’ve easily just arrived from a photo shoot for GQ. He held something behind his back, but Jaslene couldn’t see it from her vantage point. “Where’s Imani?”

“I dropped her off at a rehearsal this morning. They started at seven o’clock,” Jaslene said, still curious about what he held behind him.

“You two are practically wearing matching outfits. This is so cute.
